No Kill Louisville

We envision our community as a place where no adoptable pet or feral cat is killed, regardless of resources, economics, or politics.

About The Shelter...

Posted by Jessica Reid on May 20, 2010 at 11:26 AM

Leo Weekly recently did an article concerning the new adoption center being built to ease some of the strain on the staff and animals at Louisville Metro Animal Services, the city-run shelter.  It's incredible what the staff there has done in the few months since the defunct director resigned.

This article is a little harsh given that building and planning the adoption center was under the former leadership.  However, it does make a few good points.  I also call into question quoting a past director in that no one asked how many animals were dying while he was in charge.

As you know, No Kill Louisville does not believe that killing animals equals success.  Challenging the status quo and *helping* the staff and animals at the shelter is the only path to a No Kill community.

I am quoted in this article. I do support the shelter fully and completely - but only because those working there are now working toward a better environment and approach for the animals. They are making strides and this effort should not be ignored.

Having said that - here is the article:

Would there be a way to start some sort of letter writing campaign to the new mayor and city council members stating that this long overdue problem needs to be looked at before more innocent animals needlessly suffer and die? Surely there is some way the public can be made aware of the issue. Even writing daily letters to the editor of the Courier Journal or possibly attempting to get one of the TV stations investigative teams involved might be possible.
Thank you for speaking up about this problem and the inept management - or should I say mismanagement- of what should be a glowing example of what a big city can do for it's neglected animal population. Such a travesty needs to be in the public eye. If the new city government touts transparency then things like this ought to glare in the spotlight and be corrected ASAP.
