A transport is a coordinated effort between multiple volunteers to move a rescue animal from one location to another. Some transports are only a few hours long and some last two to three days, with overnight stays for the animal along the way. Most people are not aware that every weekend, a network of dedicated drivers moves animals all across the country--from state to state and even across national borders. For the cost of a tank of gas and a couple of hours of your time, you can help save an animal's life by volunteering to participate in these transport efforts.
There are many reasons an animal may need transport. Most often it is being moved from a "high kill" shelter (i.e., one that euthanizes animals for space) to a rescue organization that will foster, rehabilitate, and rehome it. Animals are also transported from rescues or foster homes to their final forever (or "fur-ever") homes.
On this page, we list transport legs passing through the Louisville area, as well as transport needs in our local animal welfare community. Each transport has unique contact information based on who is organizing the relay. Please contact the coordinators directly if you wish to volunteer.
Transport coordinators may send run sheets directly to info@nokill-louisville.com for posting. Updates are always appreciated!

PLEASE NOTE: We do our best to ensure the information on this page is up-to-date, but may not always receive word when a leg has been filled. If a transport is marked "FILLED," this refers to only the legs posted on this page and not necessarily the entire transport.
Each transport has a coordinator, who maps a route from the departure city to the destination. This route is then divided into "legs" of approximately forty-five minutes to an hour and a half each. Sometimes, the transport will require an "overnight," which means a volunteer gives the animal accomodation until the transport can resume the next day. A person who wishes to drive a particular leg (or legs), or to allow an animal to stay in their home overnight, should contact the coordinator to make an "offer." The coordinator will respond to the offer--usually within twenty-four hours. If you make an offer and are new to transporting (or to the specific coordinator), you will be asked to provide personal and vehicle information and references before the offer is accepted. Please note that coordinators are volunteers and the planning of a transport is very complicated and time-consuming. If you make an offer and do not hear back within 24 hours, please re-send your email as the coordinator may have missed it. If you still do not hear back, most likely the need has been filled.
